Well done to all involved in Sunday’s seminar for new referees held in St Mary’s College RFC. The seminar hosted by David Keane, Leinster’s IRFU development officer, had 34 attendees from across Leinster. David covered almost every aspect of the game whilst contributions from Mark Power, Kevin Beggs (straight from Munster v Treviso), Alfie Acheson and Gary Glennon filled in the gaps in on and off the pitch.
This year has produced a bumper crop for Leinster Referees and our future looks safe. Our development programmes will identify talent and help the referee achieve their full potential.
To the new referees good luck on your first step along your new career path and be sure to ask for help when you need it.

Our website has won a Gold Referee Web Award at RugbyRefs.com.

The Award is recognition for the hard work, time and effort that goes into making a website presentable, useful and up to date.
The Gold award isn’t only about how a website looks, it’s about it’s content, how useful it is to referees, and how well it is used as a public relations tool.
Congratulations to Dan Wallace and John Montayne for their hard work and effort that they put into www.arlb.ie

Last Saturday, before the Ulster Bank League clash with Terenure, Old Wesley made a special presentation to Alan Lewis to mark his recent retirement from refereeing

Alan, refereed at the highest level and took charge of 47 major Internationals, 83 Heineken Cup Matches and refereed at both the 2003 and 2007 Rugby World Cups.
Amongst his major achievements were to referee the European Cup final in 2007 and a World Cup quarter final in the same year. He is one of the longest serving referees in International Rugby.
A member of Old Wesley since 1982, Alan played on the McCorry Cup Team that reached the final in the 1982-83 season only to be beaten 10-6 by UCD.
He was a very fine out-half and an excellent place kicker and would have gone far as a player, only that injury cut short his career at a young age.
Alan then took up refereeing and has represented the Club with distinction over many years throughout all parts of the world. He was previously honoured by the Old Wesley in 2005 by being made a Vice-President of the Club.
Alan thanked the Club for the presentation and went on to entertain the large audience with many amusing stories from his long and illustrious career.
The audience was further entertained by speeches from the President of Old Wesley Ivan White and the President of Terenure Ronnie Harrison.
At the request of the Australian Rugby Union the International Rugby Board, the game’s legislative body, has clarified on three aspects of law. These clarifications, which used to be called rulings, were issued on 23 November 2011 and have the force of law.
The clarifications are the work of a committee called the Designated Members. At present the designated members are Members Graham Mourie (Chairman), John Jeffrey and David Pickering.
The clarifications are provided in English, French and Spanish.
